Pregnancy Disability Leave

Understanding pregnancy/maternity leave can be confusing. So here are things you will need to do before starting your leave to ensure you receive all leave entitlements per your collective bargaining agreement as well as Federal and State Law.

1. You must inform Human Resources, in writing, at least a month before going out on pregnancy disability leave. Letting your site principal know is NOT sufficient.

2. Provide Human Resources with a doctor’s note indicating your due date, and beginning date of your pregnancy disability (or last day of work). Your doctor may fax the doctor’s note to (831) 385-0695 ATTN: Human Resources or email to:  [email protected]

3. Released to return to work. Your doctor will determine when you are medically able to return to work; typically for a normal pregnancy, the disability period is up to four weeks after giving birth, but all pregnancies are different and your doctor may extend your disability if there are medical complications, or if you are unable to perform your regular or customary job duties.

4. At least a week in advance, you must submit a note to Human Resources from your doctor indicating date when you are medically able to return to work. You will not be able to return to work unless this note is on file. Your doctor may fax the doctor’s note to (831) 385-0695 ATTN: Human Resources or email to: [email protected]

5. Once you are released by your doctor to return to work, you will have the option to continue to stay home to care and bond with your newborn under the California Family Rights Act or CFRA.  If you choose to take advantage of this type of leave, you must submit your request in writing to Human Resources.
